Meet Vogue the Italian Mastiff and her owner Natasha Belosev
About the breed
Vogue is a Cane Corso also known as an Italian Mastiff, an old breed that originated from Italy.
The Cane Corso is a large mastiff breed originally bred to protect and guard its family, livestock, and property. They were also a dog of war and could be used to hunt large game or battle lions and bears in coliseums.
They are highly intelligent and learn fast, and have a strong loyalty to their family.
They aren’t as big as some of their mastiff cousins but they are more energetic and love to learn.
Why did you choose this particular breed?
We chose the Cane Corso because we love the family loyalty and gentleness of the mastiff breed and we wanted a dog with some energy to jog with and easy to train.
Vogue embodies all these traits, she is super easy to train and loves to learn and full of energy, but equally loves our son and is devoted, gentle and loyal to him and us as her family.
Vogue also has two poodle sisters (one toy and one miniature) who she also loves and thinks she is the same size as.
Is their personality/behaviour in line with what people may associate with the breed?
She is super social and friendly and LOVES other puppies and kids.
Even though she may look intimidating she is calm and notices everything and always on watch. She will always assess a situation and sees how her family responds before she takes any action herself.
Any tips for someone considering getting this breed?
They are super social and Love their family.
They need to be part of the family and not just left outside on their own 24/7. They are a large breed so I always recommend teaching the big dog rules to even a small puppy so that way they will always know what’s expected of them and as they grow (which they do really quick) there won’t be many adjustments, for example if you don’t want your cane corso to lay on the sofa/lounge don’t let them do it when they are a cute tiny puppy and then change the rules as they get bigger.
They love kids and other puppies so socialize them heaps and expose them to heaps of positive environments. Spend time with them, they can be stubborn and are super smart so you need to train them and start young and make it a fun interaction and as part of your day.
How interested/good at training or obedience?
Amazing, Vogue loves to learn and she learns super fast and is super willing to please.
Any tricks, skills or community work?
Vogue hangs out in the grooming salon every day and loves to play with all the different breeds that come in and greet all the customers. She learned all basic commands early on and now we are focusing on some show training and one day look forward to doing some competitive obedience and agility.
