Meet Wally the Saint Bernard and his owners Farren and Levi Stripp

About the Breed

The St. Bernard or St Bernard is a breed of very large working dog from the western Alps in Italy and Switzerland. It is said that they were a popular rescue dog for travelers moving through the Alpine pass between Switzerland and Italy as they can smell a human under large amounts of snow.

Why did you choose this particular breed

We have always loved giant breed dogs and particularly fell in love with the dopiness of the Saint Bernard. They are gentle giants!

Is their personality/behaviour in line with what people associated with the breed?

Absolutely! There has been a strong perception that Saint Bernards are super friendly, patient, well natured and they have certainly been on the mark, especially about Wally!

Wally is a very happy and social dog. We take Wally with us everywhere – out to breakfast, the beach, camping (just to name a few) and because of his relaxed nature it is just so easy, he is honestly just happy to be wherever we are. He of course is also a big sook and loves to cuddle up in the morning.

Any tips for someone considering getting this breed?

For people considering getting a Saint Bernard, it’s best to understand that they are a high maintenance breed.

They are a messy dog! Even as a puppy, Wally drools everywhere and brings large amounts of mud and dirt inside with his big paws. Saint Bernards also shed a fair bit, we brush Wally daily and it’s amazing how much fur comes off!

Saint Bernards are loyal dogs and love being around their family. They are best suited to families who are happy to share their life with them (and their couch)!

Be prepared to receive a lot of attention! People come from near and far to be able to pat and take photos of Wally.

How interested/good at training or obedience?

Saint Bernards like to please people so they are super easy to train if consistent. They can have short attention spans so keeping dedicated training sessions to 30 minutes per day or less is a good start. Treats always work well, Wally will do just about anything for a bit of chicken.

Any tricks, community work?

Wally can sit, stay and lay down on command. He is also an expert at digging holes at the beach. We are working on the rest 😊
